Honoring the Past, Broadcasting the Future
Our History
From its founding in 1966 to today, WKBY stands as a reminder that local radio still matters—especially when it carries a message of hope. The legacy of Lawrence Campbell Sr. lives on through every broadcast, every voice, and every life touched.
The Beginning: 1966
WKBY first signed on the air on June 8, 1966, in Chatham, Virginia, during a time when radio served as the heartbeat of local communities.
From its earliest days, the station was rooted in service, connection, and communication, reaching listeners across Danville and Pittsylvania County.
As a daytime AM station, WKBY quickly became a trusted source for music, ministry, and community information—especially in rural Southside Virginia.
A Station with a Purpose
Unlike many stations that changed formats over the years, WKBY developed and maintained a clear identity centered on:
- Black Gospel music
- Faith-based programming
- Community engagement
This consistency helped establish WKBY as more than a station—it became a spiritual and cultural anchor for its listeners.
Ownership
WKBY is licensed to and operated under Gloria Corporation, a locally rooted organization based in Danville, Virginia.
At the heart of its leadership is Lawrence Campbell Sr., who served as owner and guiding force behind the station. Alongside him was his wife, Gloria Campbell, a respected civil rights leader and woman of faith.
Leadership Legacy
Together, they built not only ministries but also institutions that strengthened the community—spiritually, socially, and culturally.
Their lives reflected a commitment to:
- Faith leadership
- Civil rights and community empowerment
- Building platforms that uplift voices often unheard
From Then to Now
Over the decades, WKBY has remained locally owned and community-driven, continuing its mission under the leadership and legacy established by Lawrence Campbell Sr.
Even as technology evolved—from traditional AM radio to online streaming—the station expanded its reach while staying true to its original purpose: To inspire, inform, and uplift.
Today, WKBY is known as “Inspirational 1080”, reaching listeners not only across Virginia, but across the country and beyond through digital streaming.
A Living Legacy
WKBY’s story is not just about broadcasting—it is about impact. It is:
- The sound of Sunday morning worship
- The voice of community dialogue
- A platform for pastors, leaders, and everyday people
- A bridge between generations
And most importantly, it is a testament to what happens when vision, faith, and community come together.
